The khao soi you almost walk past

Khao Soi Sala Noi sits in a corner shophouse just inside the Old City, off Thanon Arak — a provision counter with a wok, a few tables and a blue awning. Guests keep writing the same thing: you would not say it is a restaurant, and you almost miss it.

Order at the counter and a bowl lands in minutes: a rich, fragrant coconut curry, soft egg noodles and a tangle of crispy ones on top, with lime, shallot and pickled greens on the side. Chicken or marinated pork, both ฿50.

Beyond the khao soi the same little kitchen turns out wok plates — fried rice, pad see ew, stir-fried pork — cooked to order by a lovely couple who run the whole thing themselves. Gluten-free? They will do the soup with rice noodles.
